Ticket scams are a growing concern worldwide, especially when demand spikes for major concerts and live events. The Singapore Police Force recently issued an advisory on concert ticket scams.

These scams can happen across different online channels, but the pattern is often the same: pressure, urgency, and requests to pay before you can verify.

Imagine this: you are waiting in the online queue for concert tickets to see your favorite artist. The queue opened at 10 a.m. You've been refreshing for three minutes straight. Every seat you tap is already taken.

Then a message arrives.

"Join this group chat of fans where you can get tickets cheaper and faster."

You follow the link and enter what looks like a normal chatroom of buyers and sellers. One seller seems trustworthy, so you add them as a contact. Soon, they message you directly: "Hey, I have a contact at the venue. I can get you 2 tickets before they sell out. Need payment now, they'll be gone in minutes."

You don’t know who is behind the chat, but the timing is perfect. You may be tempted to tap the link before you stop to think. This is the moment scammers are trained to create.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Scammers often target moments when you want something badly enough to act quickly. That is why pressure, urgency, and “pay now” requests are the warning signs to watch for. Scam approaches share a common playbook, even when the entry point feels legitimate.

A legitimate-looking entry point. It rarely begins with a stranger out of nowhere. It begins in a group chat you joined, through a QR code you scanned, or via a referral from someone you know. The familiar entry point is part of what makes it convincing.

Artificial urgency. "Act now." "Only 2 left." "Expires in 10 minutes." The pressure is designed to compress your decision window before you think clearly.

Upfront payment to an unknown party. Be cautious if someone asks you to transfer money immediately to a personal account or unfamiliar payment link, especially before you can verify who they are.

Requests for personal information. A genuine transaction should not require you to share OTPs, NRIC numbers, or banking credentials with an unsolicited contact.

If any one of these appears, slow down. If more than one appears together, stop completely.

When You Feel Rushed, Pause First

The Singapore Police Force's guidance on this is consistent: pause, verify, and tell someone before you act.

Pause. The urgency you feel is real, but it was put there deliberately. Real opportunities do not disappear in the seconds it takes to stop and think.

Verify. Check through the official channel, the venue's website, the brand's verified account, the company's published contact. If the offer is genuine, it will still be there after a thirty-second check.

Tell someone. A friend, a family member, anyone who is not caught up in the same excitement. A second perspective cuts through emotional pressure faster than anything else.

If you have already transferred money or shared personal information, contact your bank immediately and file a police report at police.gov.sg.

Use Platform Safety Tools When You See Suspicious Activity

If you come across suspicious activity on a platform, use the available complaints or reporting tools to flag it. On WeChat, you can submit a complaint if you see a suspicious account or message.

To report a suspicious account: tap on their name within the chat to open their profile, then tap the "···" menu in the top right corner, then tap “Report”. Select the reason that best matches what you saw. Then choose the relevant messages as evidence, add any supporting details if needed, and submit the report.

Know the Pattern Before You Act

Wanting something is human nature. Scammers exploit that moment. Knowing how these scams work can help you stop before you share information, send money, or click a suspicious link. Pause. Verify. Report.
